The Formation of the State of Israel and the Importance of Milk Pasteurization

The Rothschild dynasty is one of the most famous and highly scrutinized family lines in modern history. Renowned for their sprawling banking networks, vast real estate holdings, and deep-seated political influence, the family name has long been synonymous with behind-the-scenes global power. They were instrumental in reshaping the modern Middle East; it was to Lionel Walter Rothschild that the British government sent the historic 1917 Balfour Declaration, a letter signaling official backing for a Jewish national home in Palestine. Yet, for a family so deeply woven into global politics, its members rarely spoke out in public. A striking exception was Victor Rothschild, the 3rd Baron Rothschild. Victor was a man of many faces: a Cambridge-trained biologist, a decorated World War II bomb-disposal expert for MI5 (Britain's domestic intelligence agency), and a government advisor. He also inherited a lifetime seat in the House of Lords—the unelected upper chamber of the British Congress. Despite holding this powerful political position for decades, Victor chose to break his silence and give a formal speech exactly twice in his life. Both speeches took place in 1946, right after World War II, and they focused on two drastically different topics.

The House of Lords Speeches

    •    Milk (April 1946): Demanded mandatory pasteurization to stop tuberculosis.     •    Palestine (July 1946): Urged immediate admission of 100,000 European Jews. It remains one of the strangest juxtapositions in political history: a titan of the Rothschild empire dedicating his rare public moments to an international "refugee crisis" on one hand, and the boiling temperatures of dairy products on the other. Of the two things he cared about most in life, why is milk one of them? ✝️🇺🇸 🫡
