The Simple Guide to Trump Accounts: A New Way to Save for Your Kids

Did some research for my own family using the new America.gov (which is very well built!) and Google Gemini and figured it might help others decide:
What are Trump Accounts?
The Trump Account is a new type of savings and investment account for children under 18. It is managed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury under uniform federal rules nationwide. Unlike old-fashioned savings accounts, it is built to give kids a massive financial head start in life.
How It Works
• Free Government Kickstart: U.S. citizen children born between 2025 and 2028 get a one-time $1,000 federal pilot deposit to start them off. • Annual Limits: Families can save up to $5,000 per year in the account. • Low-Cost Investing: The money goes into safe, low-fee U.S. index funds (like S&P 500 trackers) with fees capped at an ultra-low 0.10%. • Age 18 Handover: When your child turns 18, they take full control. The money turns into a regular Traditional IRA.
Why It Beats Other Accounts
1. It is for much more than college A 529 plan forces you to spend the money on higher education, or face a 10% penalty. A Trump Account can be used for any major life milestone after age 18, like buying a first home, launching a small business, or keeping it invested for retirement. 2. No job required to start Standard Roth IRAs require a child to have a job and earned income. Anyone can open a Trump Account for a baby the day he or she is born. 3. No beneficiary worries With 529 plans, parents must constantly manage who gets the money and transfer names if a sibling skips college. A Trump Account belongs permanently to the child from day one, tied directly to their Social Security number. 4. Massive workplace tax perks This is the only account where employers or universities can chip in up to $2,500 a year for your child completely free of federal income and payroll taxes. You can even use pre-tax deductions from your own paycheck to fund it, lowering your current tax bill. 5. Financial aid protection The balance inside a Trump Account is completely hidden from the FAFSA when applying for college financial aid because the government views it as a retirement asset.
How to Sign Up
Go to TrumpAccounts.gov or file IRS Form 4547. All you need is your child’s Social Security number, birth date, and address to claim their free $1,000 seed and start saving.
